Important Information

Immunizations

Currently there are no compulsory immunizations required for travel in Phuket. Although it is recommended that these vaccines are considered.

  • Polio- up to date
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis ‘A’
  • Tetanus- up to date

Money

Phuket’s currency is Baht (THB), which is divided into 100 satang. Notes are issued in B10, B20, B50, B100, B500, and B1000. Coins consist of the following: B10, B5, B1, 50 and 25 satang. Banks in Phuket will adjust their currency rates on a daily basis, inline with international money markets, and will usually offer good rates. Hotels usually offer exchange services but at a higher rate. Foreign exchange booths are located around Phuket, and always offer good rates.

Banking hours in Phuket are Monday-Friday 8.30am-3.30pm. Currency exchange booths are usually open daily from 8am-6.30pm, later in major tourist areas. ATM’s are also widely available.

Personal Items

Do not agree to carry packages or letters into, or out of Phuket on someone else’s behalf. You are responsible for all items in your possession.  There has been severe penalties for the possession and trafficking of drugs in and out of Phuket.

Dos and Don’ts

  • Keep displays of affection in public places to a minimum.
  • Do not swim topless
  • When visiting a Buddhist temple, women should ensure their legs and shoulders are covered before entering a Buddhist temple. Shoes must be removed when inside a Buddhist chapel.
  • Buddhist monks are forbidden to touch or be touched by a female. If a female want to hand something to a monk, she must hand it to a male who will then pass on to the monk.
  • If you hire a jet ski, wear a life jacket and keep away from swimmers.
  • The law requires all front seat passengers in cars to wear seatbelts.
